The crisis shows no signs of easing, with Howe expected to be without 12 first-team members (including suspended Sandro Tonali) this weekend. No other club has so many absentees.
The mood around Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is brighter as Postecoglou prepares to lead the north Londoners back into the Champions League.
However, the manager will tell his players that nothing has been achieved yet, and any remaining optimists within the Manchester United fan base will point to Tottenham’s tricky encounter, which includes this trip to St James’ Park and clashes with Arsenal, Liverpool. and Manchester City.
There are still many points to play for and Newcastle, for their part, will believe they can still finish in sixth place. That would represent a decent season given the circumstances.
