Newcastle United vs Everton Predictions

Newcastle United kept their European hopes alive this weekend in the most dramatic fashion possible.

Trailing 3-1 against West Ham United, it looked like Eddie Howe’s side were on the verge of a defeat that would have seen them drop to the bottom half of the Premier League.

Instead, the Magpies dug deep and found a way to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. At the end of the match, their supporters were celebrating a sensational 4-3 victory which put them one point outside the top seven.

As things stand, seventh place wouldn’t be enough to qualify for the Europa League. But it’s likely that will be enough at the end of the season.

There may be some Newcastle fans who wouldn’t mind missing the Europa League. After all, Howe’s team participated in the group stage of the Champions League this season. This is the competition they will be aiming to return to in 2024/25.

However, this is probably a minority view among the St James’ Park faithful. This is a club that has punched below its weight throughout the Mike Ashley era. Any chance to participate in a continental competition should be welcomed.

Additionally, a club that has not won a major trophy since 1955 should not turn down the opportunity to participate in one more tournament.

There is still work to be done. The Magpies have been crippled by injuries throughout the season and lost three more players this weekend. Anthony Gordon will also miss this match due to suspension.

Howe certainly won’t get ahead of himself given his team’s inconsistencies throughout the 2023/24 season. It’s a bit cliché, but the Newcastle boss is really going to take it one game at a time.

Newcastle United vs Everton predictions

Newcastle United and Everton need points for very different reasons as they prepare to face each other.

Draw – 11/4 (Sky Bet)

Everton are in a precarious position. An 11-match winless streak was extended to 12 on Saturday, as Bournemouth’s late winner (a Seamus Coleman own goal) condemned Everton to defeat on the south coast.

Sean Dyche’s side are just three points clear of the bottom three. A new points deduction is reportedly underway, linked to Everton’s second charge over alleged breaches of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

With all this pessimism, why are we backing Everton to avoid defeat at St James’ Park?

One reason is that Newcastle are defensively vulnerable, as the topsy-turvy encounter with West Ham demonstrated.

Certainly, the Toffees are hardly prolific. But they are creating chances and they should be able to do so against a patched-up Newcastle backline.

Moreover, Howe’s team spent a lot of energy against West Ham. Everton will sit deep and look to waste – the type of opponents Newcastle might struggle against.

At the odds available, it’s worth going for a draw at St James’ Park.

Opt for a draw at 11/4 with Sky Bet

Newcastle to score first – 4/6 (Sky Bet)

Newcastle tend to start quickly in front of their own fans. They have scored the opening goal in 13 of their 15 Premier League matches at St James’ Park this season, more than anyone else in the division.

Newcastle are also doing well in the first half home table. Only Manchester City and Aston Villa have better records from the first to the 45th minute in their respective seats.

Everton are usually slow to get into unchartered territory. They are the only team in the Championship to have led just once at half-time in an away match in 2023/24.

This is partly because Dyche often uses cautious tactics on the road and partly because Everton are chronically incapable of taking their chances.

Whichever way you look at it, Newcastle are well placed to draw first blood on Tuesday night.

The home side could well run out of steam as the match wears on, but their record first goal at St James is hard to ignore.

Opt for Newcastle to score first at 4/6 with Sky Bet

Harvey Barnes will score anytime – 9/4 (Sky Bet)

Harvey Barnes was Newcastle’s hero against West Ham. He scored both the equalizer and the winner on Saturday, delighting the home crowd on both occasions.

With Gordon banned and Almiron injured, Barnes will be back in the starting XI for the visit of Everton.

The former Leicester City striker has had an interrupted season due to injury, but he showed his quality this weekend.

Barnes is a direct runner and Everton will look to deny him space in the final third. But the way he scored his second goal against West Ham showed that Barnes is also capable of finding space in busy areas.

Alexander Isak is the favorite in this market, but we like Barnes’ look.

Pick Harvey Barnes as your anytime goalscorer at 9/4 with Sky Bet
