However, the club issued an operations notice on Thursday to say Bruce would attend a press briefing on Friday afternoon.

It will be a historic moment for Bruce as the shock of St James’ Park will be his 1,000th in management.

The club come into the game in second from the bottom of the Premier League, winless in their first seven games.

But even if Bruce is in charge on Sunday, that is unlikely to end the speculation, with figures like Antonio Conte, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard linked to the post.

The club’s takeover was finally approved by the Premier League a week ago, after receiving “legally binding assurances” from the new owners that Saudi Arabia would have no control over the club’s affairs.

The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) – which controls how the country’s sovereign wealth is invested – has taken an 80% stake in the club.

The PIF board is chaired by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman and seven of the other eight board members are described as either ministers or a royal advisor on the fund’s official website.
