Newark Airport Runway Closed After Plane Incident – NBC New York

Some flights to Newark Liberty International Airport were grounded after a plane left the airport’s runway while landing Thursday afternoon, the FAA said.

The FAA said some Newark-bound flights had to be halted at their originating airport after a private Embraer business jet left the runway, which remains closed. Due to runway closures, the airport’s ability to accept arrival plans is reduced, according to the FAA.

A wing of the private plane was damaged in the incident, which occurred around 1:50 p.m., according to the Port Authority.

No injuries were reported. The runway will remain closed for an investigation, which the Port Authority said could impact arrivals and departures.

The FAA website listed a temporary ground stop in Newark starting at 3 p.m., which was later changed to a ground delay.

Departures from Newark were delayed 15 minutes or more, while flights to Newark from other airports were delayed an average of about 95 minutes, the site said.

United Airlines, in a social media response to a passenger, said some flights had to bypass Newark airspace.

“A plane was stuck on the runway at EWR, and some planes had to bypass the airspace,” the message said.
