Speaking at a regular Covid-19 press conference, Ardern said health authorities reported nine cases of Omicron in Motueka in a single-family household. The family traveled to Auckland to attend a wedding, funeral, theme park and tourist attraction last weekend, prompting the country to run the highest ‘red light’.

Ardern told reporters: “My wedding will not take place, but I have just joined many other New Zealanders who have had an experience like this as a result of the pandemic.”

When asked how she felt about her decision to call off the wedding that was due to take place this summer, Ardern replied, “Such is life.”

Last month, New Zealand said it was pushing back its phased reopening of borders until the end of February due to concerns over the Omicron variant.

Chris Hipkins, the National Minister for Covid-19 Response, said: “Waiting until the end of February will increase New Zealand’s overall protection and slow the potential spread of Omicron. There is no doubt that this is disappointing and will upset many holiday plans, but it is important to clearly outline these changes today so that they have time to review these plans.”

Hipkins also said the New Zealand Cabinet had agreed to other precautionary measures, including reducing the interval between a second dose of Covid-19 vaccine and a booster from six months to four months, and increasing the required length of stay for returning travelers of seven to 10 days of controlled isolation and quarantine.
