A New York building made famous by the iconic series Sex and the City could soon be blocked off from intrusive fans if its owner gets his way.
“At any time of the day or night there are groups of visitors outside the house taking flash photos, chatting loudly, posting on social media, making TikTok videos (sic) or just celebrating the moment “, she wrote. to the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.
The building, located at 66 Perry Street in Greenwich Village, was used in the popular HBO show, as the exterior of character Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment.
The owner currently has a chain link fence in place to keep fans out, now she wants a cast iron gate for added deterrence.
Because the owner, who remains anonymous in her application, lives in a historic district, she needs permission before installing the iron gate to keep crowds away from her home.
THE application demand for the iron fence was first reported in the Substack newsletter Feed me.
The owner said some fans respected the chain – which has a “No Trespassing on Private Property” sign attached – currently in place, but “many” did not.
“They climb over the chain, pose, dance or lie on the steps, climb to the top to look out the living room windows, attempt to open the main front door or, when drunk late at night evening, ring the doorbell,” she said. wrote.
There was also graffiti painted on the steps and initials carved into the main door frame, she said.
“After more than 20 years of hoping that the fascination with my stoop would fade and fans would find a new object for their devotion, I recognized we needed something more substantial,” she wrote in his application. “In order to regain a reasonable quality of life for our tenants and for ourselves: we need to install an adequate gate.”
Sex and the City aired on HBO from 1998 to 2004 and won 7 Emmy Awards during its tenure.
It follows the love and sex lives of four New York women and has gained popularity in recent years since younger women discovered the series on streaming platforms such as Netflix.
Since its initial release, two Sex and the City films have continued to follow the women, as well as a sequel called And Just Like That.
