New York to Ban Small Shampoo Bottles in Hotels

New York State will require hotels to ditch small bottles of “amenity care” products like shampoo and lotion.

The move comes as a bill passed in the New York Assembly hoping to reduce waste.

Starting January 1, 2025, hotels with more than 50 rooms will not be able to provide toiletries bottles smaller than 12 ounces, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation website.

The law, which was first introduced in 2019, defines a “hospitality personal care product” as a “product provided by a hotel and intended to be applied or used on the human body or any part thereof for cleaning,” the legislation states.

The law states that hotels that violate this restriction will first receive a warning with 30 days to “correct the violation.”

If the hotel fails to do so, it will be “liable to a civil penalty of two hundred and fifty dollars against the state.”

A $500 fine will be imposed if the hotel continues to supply bottles within 30 days, according to the legislation.

Some major hotels have already started making adjustments.

“We have long focused on our residential amenities program, transitioning from small toiletry bottles to larger pump-top bottles as part of our commitment to reducing plastic waste,” a Marriott Hotels spokesperson told FOX Business.

The spokesperson added that by the end of 2023, Marriot hotels have achieved “95% compliance for the transition to residential bath amenities for select brands at managed and franchised hotels worldwide, with additional properties transitioning by 2024.”

A Hilton spokesperson told FOX Business: “Starting in 2023, Hilton properties have been required to transition to standard-sized shampoo, conditioner and soap products, eliminating single-use miniature bottles and reducing discarded bars of soap.”

The rollout begins with major hotels, while from 2026 all hotels in New York will have to comply.

The law was due to come into effect on January 1, 2023, but hotel industry lobbyists They requested a delay so hotel staff could use the remaining bottles in stock, Fox Television Stations reported.
