Getting to, from and around the “city so nice they named it twice” can be a pain. Rush hour traffic, random street closures and public transportation delays are all daily nuisances.
But the painful hassle of stampedes is not limited to the city limits.
“New York State workers (have) the longest commute times,” says an April 2024 report from the U.S. Department of Energy.
The DOE, which manages the nation’s nuclear infrastructure and administers the nation’s energy policy, used 2022 data on the average one-way commute time of 9 to 5 years to work to compile a list of the 10 worst states for commuting.
Researchers determined that most New Yorkers spend about 33.2 minutes commuting to the office.
And while traveling on a train, bus or car for a little over half an hour doesn’t sound so bad, the trip did earn the Empire State the top spot on the list of longest commutes. .
Straphangers in Maryland, New Jersey and the District of Columbia have it almost as bad.
The results revealed that people in each province also waste just over 30 minutes of their lives commuting to their office Monday to Friday.
DOE analysts attributed long jaunts around densely populated states to “traffic and urban sprawl.”
Experts also noted that the average one-way commute time across the United States is about 27 minutes.
But Midwest employees have it best.
“South Dakota and North Dakota had average travel times of less than 18 minutes,” the report reads.
Workers in similar provincial areas such as Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Montana also enjoy quick mixes just under the 20-minute mark.
However, some business bigwigs don’t mind long commutes.
Susan Miller, a “super commuter” from New York, happily boards a plane every week to work as a full-time professor at the University of Michigan.
And hairstylist Kaitlin Jay, 30, told the Post she was perfectly happy spending nearly six hours going door-to-door from her home in Charlotte, North Carolina, to work in a hair salon. the Upper West Side every two weeks.
“I love what I do in New York and I love life in Charlotte,” she said. “I get the best of both worlds.”
