New Mafia game revealed, set for release in 2025 | gamescom 2024

A fourth Mafia game, titled Mafia: The Old Country, was officially revealed today during gamescom’s Opening Night Live as the show’s big closing announcement. It’s set to arrive in 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam.

The action will take place in Sicily in the 1900s, although we haven’t had much information outside of that. More details will be revealed in December, likely at The Game Awards.

“Discover the origins of organized crime in Mafia: The Old Country, a brutal gangster story set in the brutal underworld of 1900s Sicily,” reads the trailer’s description on YouTube. “Fight to survive in this dangerous and unforgiving era, with action driven by the authentic realism and rich storytelling that the critically acclaimed Mafia series is known for.”

This was a massive and typically unexpected reveal to close out gamescom’s Opening Night Live. A new Mafia game has been teased in the past, but this is the first official reveal for The Old Country.

2K Games launched the Mafia series in 2002, followed by Mafia II in 2010 and Mafia III in 2016, the most recent Mafia game. Mafia III was also the first to be developed by 2K’s Hangar 13, which also developed the remake of the first Mafia game, Mafia: Definitive Edition, in 2020.

Hangar 13 CEO Roman Hladík and production and media director Tomáš Hřebíček previously confirmed that the studio was working on a “brand new Mafia project” in 2022. Hladik said at the time: “While that’s a few years away and we can’t share anything more at the moment, we’re really excited to continue working on this beloved franchise and entertain our players with new stories.”

We’re of course still waiting for more information, but the reveal of its universe is sure to cause a lot of ink to flow among fans. In the meantime, check out our summary of everything that was announced during gamescom’s Opening Night Live.
