New defense, Christopher Nkunku, Achraf Hakimi and starlet back in

The sale of Chelsea to a consortium led by American businessman Todd Boehly has now been confirmed ahead of next season.

And, while a new owner normally means a huge upheaval at a club, it seems unlikely to happen at Stamford Bridge.

Boehly now controls one of the biggest clubs in world football

Chairman Bruce Buck, manager Marina Granovskaia and technical and performance adviser Petr Cech are expected to remain at the club after the takeover, which should mean business as usual in west London.

This company normally seeks to recruit the best players in world football, with Mateo Kovacic, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku having all joined the club in recent years.

And this year it looks like it will be no different, with the Blues linked with some of Europe’s hottest properties.

Coach Thomas Tuchel will be aiming to improve on his third-place finish in the Premier League last season, as well as his two second-place finishes in both domestic cups.

Achraf Hakimi and Christopher Nkunku are two of the players who have been heavily linked with a move to west London which would add to their already star-studded squad.

Hakimi has revealed he turned down a transfer alongside Tuchel last summer, before signing for Paris Saint-Germain – but The Athletic report they could return for the right-back this year.

Hakimi has been wanted by Chelsea on several occasions in recent years

But what does this mean for current right-back Reece James?

The England international has established himself as one of the best in the world in his position, so it seems odd to have him and Hakimi in the same team.

There have been reports linking the 22-year-old with Real Madrid which could mean Hakimi is seen as a replacement for James.

But it looks more likely that Tuchel will be looking to use James on the right side of a three-man defence, a position he has played successfully many times under the German.

Christensen and Rudiger are both leaving Stamford Bridge this summer

Chelsea will currently only have three senior centre-backs at the club ahead of next season, which could explain why James is considered an option in the role.

Another player who could also have a chance to shine at centre-back is not a new signing but may feel like one.

Levi Colwill has spent the 2021/22 season playing for Huddersfield in pursuit of promotion – who lost the Championship play-off final to Nottingham Forest.

The 19-year-old left-hander has shown he has what it takes to play for Les Bleus, and the club have shown they aren’t afraid to give young players an opportunity.

Colwill signed a new four-year contract with Chelsea last year

Current first-team members James, Mason Mount and Trevoh Chalobah have all been tempted by Tuchel after Championship loans, and Colwill could be next.

Looking further up the pitch and, despite Chelsea having spent over £220m on forwards over the past two seasons, Nkunku could be the next big money-maker on their shopping list.

The Frenchman has had a remarkable season in the Bundesliga, scoring 35 goals and providing 20 assists in 50 games for RB Leipzig.

The 24-year-old would also fit into the West Londoners’ frontline, being able to go No.10 but also capable of getting behind and finishing his chances in and around the box.

Statistically, Nkunku has been one of the best players in Europe this season

It’s something Kai Havertz has done superbly well since also signing with the German top flight, and this partnership, alongside the ever-brilliant Mason Mount, is an exciting prospect.

As for the rest of the squad, Edouard Mendy, Thiago Silva, Mateo Kovacic and N’golo Kante are likely to remain frequent starters after strong performances in blue last season.

Ben Chilwell is another who may feel like a new addition to the squad, with the left-back set to return after a lengthy layoff next season.

He leaves the Chelsea squad with a superb starting XI and an even better squad, even though players like Cesar Azpilicueta, Jorginho and Romelu Lukaku leave in the summer.
