New Cybertruck update will help prevent crushed fingers, says Top Gear

The Top Gear crew took the Cybertruck camping and got a sneak peek at some upcoming features, as well as a new stainless steel spot for owners of the electric pickup to store their frozen drinks.

The video shows Top Gear editor Jack Rix testing the “frunk”, the front storage space under the hood of the Cybertruck.

The trunk’s sharp edges have sparked concerns, especially with some viral videos showing the closing hood being capable of slicing carrots — and perhaps stray fingers.

Cybertruck owners can breathe a little easier, however, as the vehicle is apparently receiving a software update to improve the sensor, Rix said.

Using a banana as a test, Rix showed that the automatic sensors quickly detected the foreign body and stood up without harming the finger-shaped fruit.

Rix also introduced the “Cybercooler,” which is exactly what it sounds like: a portable cooler “that looks a bit like a Cybertruck.”

Don’t feel bad if you’ve never heard of the Cybercooler. It has not been released – or even mentioned before – by Tesla. (Promo images for the Cybertruck show ordinary, nondescript coolers).

As Rix noted, the cooler shown in the video is a “one-of-a-kind” prototype.

“Please excuse some of the slightly scruffy edges,” he said; however, if the prototype was chipped or dented in any way, it was not visible to the camera.

The video showed Rix and another person removing the cooler from the trunk. It seems slightly larger than the average camping cooler, although it’s unclear how spacious it is inside.

In the video, Rix said the Cybercooler would be “very useful” for off-roading and “crashing in the desert.”

“Lots of ice and lots of beers, I mean, water,” he joked.

Although designed for frunks, there seems to be no reason why the cooler couldn’t be carried in the bed of the Cybertruck. This can be useful for drivers who need flexible storage arrangements, especially given some concerns about lack of trunk space.

The cooler was included in the video as part of Cybertruck’s “Basecamp” line of camping accessories.

It’s unclear exactly how much the Cybercooler will cost; The Cybertent, which extends from the bed of the electric pickup truck, is currently on sale for around $3,000.

“This is, let’s face it, an obscene amount of money,” Rix said in the video, while acknowledging its “high-end design.”

Unlike other vehicle camping accessories, which are typically mounted and exposed, the Cybertent is designed to fit under the tonneau cover. Rix noted that “tent mode” would level the suspension, open the lid and could be activated remotely.

“It’s a really smart integration,” he said. “And if you have money to spend, well, I’ll check that box.”
