New California laws to take effect July 1 – NBC Bay Area

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed emergency legislation that exempts restaurants from a new law banning “junk food fees,” which is set to go into effect Monday.

Other laws that will come into effect on Monday include:

  • “No law on roofs.” Bars and nightclubs will now have to provide rape testing kits to their customers. These establishments will also have to post signs informing customers that the kits are available.
  • Rental guarantee deposits. A new law in favor of tenants stipulates that any new rental contract can only require one month’s security deposit. Existing rental agreements with larger deposits are not affected. Landlords can also always request additional fees at the end of a rental period, provided the damage exceeds one month’s security deposit.
  • Right to Repair Act. When consumers need to repair their devices, manufacturers are required to provide customers or repair shops with the parts, tools and instructions needed to service or repair an electronic device. The law applies to any cellphone costing more than $50, as well as household appliances, televisions and video recording equipment.
