New Delhi: Nethra Kumanan secured India’s second quota for the Paris Olympics in sailing on Friday, winning it under the banner of the emerging nations program at the Last Chance Regatta, an Olympic qualifier, in Hyères, France .

Nethra, who competed in the Tokyo Games three years ago, was participating in the
women’s dinghy (ILCA 6).

Nethra scored 67 net points to finish fifth overall. However, she earned the Olympic quota as the best among the Emerging Nations Program (ENP) sailors who had not yet earned a quota.

World Sailing, the sport’s global governing body, aims to help athletes from lesser-known sailing nations make an impact at the highest level through its ENP program.

The first three sailors first obtained Olympic quotas in the women’s dinghy: Romanian Ebru Bolat (36 net points), Cyprus’s Marilena Makri (37 net points) and Slovenia’s Lin Pletikos (54 net points).

Six-time Olympian Tatiana Drozdovskaya (59 net points), competing as an individual neutral athlete, placed fourth and missed her match.

The Last Chance Regatta is the last qualifying sailing event for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
