Your Netflix subscription is about to get even more expensive. News of the price hike follows the streaming giant’s fourth-quarter 2024 financial results report. The company revealed its largest quarterly subscriber increase, with 18.9 million new subscribers, bringing the base Netflix’s global subscriptions reach more than 300 million.
Naturally, with such a huge subscriber gain, the next step is to charge everyone more. Here is the impact of the new rates on your monthly bill:
- Standard package without advertising: This tier increases from $15.49 to $17.99 (a price increase of $2.50/month).
- Financed by advertising: The cheapest tier will now be $7.99 per month, down from $6.99 (a $1/month price increase).
- Prime: This tier will cost $24.99 per month, up from $22.99 per month (a $2/month price increase).
- The cost of adding an additional member to a primary account increases from $7.99 to $8.99 per month (a price increase of $1/month).
“As we continue to invest in programming and deliver more value to our members, we will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can reinvest to make Netflix even better,” the company told investors. “To this end, today we are adjusting the prices of most plans in the United States, Canada, Portugal and Argentina (which was already taken into account in the 2025 forecasts we provided in October 2024).”
The last time Netflix raised its prices was in October 2023, when the Basic plan increased from $9.99 to $11.99 and the Premium tier saw a $3 increase from $19.99. $99 to $22.99. The Premium tier now costs $5/month more than the subscription cost just over two years ago. The streamer also cracked down on password sharing, a de facto price increase for many subscribers.
Streaming services across the board have seen their prices rise over the past couple of years, including video game subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus. Despite most of these price increases, they only amount to a dollar or two per month, but it all adds up, especially if you sign up for a lot (like me). Death by a thousand paper cuts, basically.
