Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amaze the bet of Tibia and the country early on Monday morning, appointing the former Naval Chief Vice-Admiral (Res.) Eli Sharvit as a new chief of the agency.
Due to a request to the High Court of Justice, the appointment will not come into force before April 8 and could still be delayed.
In initial reactions from sources in Paris Shin, V.-Adm. Sharvit was so unknown that most of them did not have much to say, despite a clear feeling of shock that Netanyahu had not only appointed an assistant chief of Tibia to the role (who has been customary in recent decades), but has taken someone outside the agency and even outside TDS land forces.
All the advice of Netanyahu spokespersons had only been the last four candidates for the role were: the recent deputy of Shin Bet “M”, a first assistant officer of Shal Bet Yair “Rolly” Sagi, the former senior High Command Shalom Ben Hanan, and the former high-level civil servant of Mossad who had also served in the Shin Bet Eyal Tzir.
We knew that Netanyahu interviewed other candidates, but none of them had been taken seriously by the media and no one had appointed Sharvit.
However, there is nothing in Sharvit’s public file to indicate that he would be an ideological disruptor who would not lack respect for the senior officials of Shin Bet, except that he is not close to them since the navy and the agency have much to do with each other.
Sharvit served 36 years in the Israeli Navy, notably as chief of staff from 2014 to 2014 and commander from 2016 to 2021. As commander, Sharvit led the development of maritime defense capacities for the economic waters of Israel and led complex operational campaigns against Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran, said PMO.
It was also announced last week that Sharvit would be part of the FDI chief of staff. Eyal Zamir’s external team which will examine and implement lessons in the October 7 attack.
After this appointment, he will have to abandon any involvement in this panel, but his appointment could be a sign that he was not considered to be part of the same “club” as the bar and the former chief of TDS Herzi Halevi, which Netanyahu revile now.
“The Prime Minister is convinced that V.-Adm. Sharvit is the right person to direct the betting shin forward and maintain the proud heritage of the organization,” added the PMO.
Ronen Bar’s dismissal has sparked mass demonstrations across the country, many of which envisage the decision of a direct threat to democracy.
Netanyahu and Bar have been in a public war for six weeks since Bar’s Shin Bet opened an investigation into the Prime Minister’s best aid concerning the scandal known as Qatargate.
Qatargate refers to the allegations that the best aid in Netanyahu was paid by Qatar in a way that could have had an impact on their treatment of national security issues, including hostage negotiations with Qatar and Hamas.
Netanyahu also sought to blame herself for not having stopped the catastrophe of October 7 on the Bet Shin and the FDI, seeking Halevi then the resignations of Bar, in order to underline this blame.
High Court judge Gila Kanfi-Steinitz, last week that she “had not seen the need” to extend a temporary injunction joining the dismissal of the current headbar so that it included a ban on interviewing new candidates. This actually rejected the post of Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, according to which the Prime Minister could not take any measures that could affect the status of bar, including the interviews of new candidates.
This means that Netanyahu can name Sharvit, but Sharvit cannot take office before the hearing of the high court of April 8.
The high court may allow Sharvit to take up its duties, can block its appointment due to Qatargate, or can request a compromise allowing Bar to conclude the Qatargate survey, while allowing Sharvit to move to power as quickly as possible.
