Neil Warnock moves closer to returning to football with a non-league team, just one month after announcing his retirement

Legendary manager Neil Warnock is reportedly set to return to football at a non-league side in Torquay.

The 75-year-old only announced his retirement – live on talkSPORT – last month following his short spell with Scottish club Aberdeen.

But he is now set to take up a role at Torquay following the club’s takeover, where he advises the consortium.

The Bryn Consortium buyout is made up of a local businessman buying the National League South team, subject to approval.

If Warnock joins the Gulls it would seal a return to the club 31 years after saving them from Football League relegation after winning three of his nine matches in charge.

And new club co-chairman Michael Westcott announced that Warnock’s familiarity with the club made him perfect to join.

He told BBC Sport: “Neil’s knowledge of football is second to none. He knows our club very well, he knows our region very well.

“He and I have spent an enormous amount of time together over the last six weeks and I think that relationship will continue.”

Westcott then added: “I think Neil’s reputation precedes him.

“I think he is a very reassuring presence for both young and experienced players, as well as a manager of a football team.

“He has been part of the football world for over 40 years and Torquay United can benefit from his experience, his contacts, his presence, his personality.

“I think this will provide huge support to the club as we start to think about how we can be as competitive as possible on the pitch.”

Speaking on the talkSPORT Breakfast Show last month, Warnock said he was looking forward to traveling to Scotland during his retirement.

But those plans appear to be on pause for the moment as he looks to help Torquay return to the fifth tier of English football.
