NEET-UG exam row: Nearly 50% of candidates who secured grace marks skip the new test

750 of the 1,563 candidates who secured grace marks in NEET-UG skipped the retest on Sunday, June 23, officials said.

48% of candidates did not appear for the NEET re-examination, the education ministry said.

The new test was conducted at seven centers following a Supreme Court order. The grace marks were awarded to compensate for the loss of time in six centers where the examination started late on May 5.

Only 812 candidates, or 52% of the candidates, appeared for the re-examination ordered by the Supreme Court.

“At least 52% — 813 out of 1,563 candidates — appeared for the retest on Sunday,” PTI quoted a senior official of the National Testing Agency (NTA) as saying.

The NEET-UG exam was held on May 5 at 4,750 centers and around 24 lakh candidates took it.

Amid a raging row over alleged irregularities in the medical entrance exam, the NTA on Sunday debarred 17 candidates who had appeared for the exam on May 5 at centers in Bihar.

The agency had earlier debarred 63 candidates for adopting unfair methods during the exam. On Saturday, 30 more candidates from Gujarat’s Godhara were also excluded.
