Nearly 50 vehicles towed, 40 arrests made in Northern California

(FOX40.COM) — About three months after a Northern California sheriff’s office towed more than 80 cars and arrested more than 150 people during one spectacle, another spectacle led to more cars being towed and d arrests.

According to the Stockton Police Department, officers arrested 39 people and towed 44 vehicles during a “demonstration mission” the agency conducted in the city over Cinco De Mayo weekend.

What are sideshows and why are California law enforcement cracking down on them?

Stockton Police added that they made nine weapons-related arrests, issued 236 citations and conducted over 400 (403) traffic stops during the show.

Sideshows, which occur when people hang out, usually in vacant parking lots or on open roads, have become a point of contention in California as law enforcement agencies across the state have said they can cause property damage, injury and even death.

In early February, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office broke up a large show at Country Club Boulevard and Pershing Avenue, leading to road closures and the seizure of myriad vehicles.

To send a message to those who participated in the spectacle, sheriff’s office deputies said they would not return seized vehicles “anytime soon” to those involved in the event.

‘Stop Calling’: Sheriff Says No One Will Get Their Vehicle Back Soon After Massive Show Collapse

“These vehicles will be held until their legal matters are resolved with the prosecutor’s office. They won’t be released anytime soon unless the prosecutor clears your case,” the deputies said. “No need to call all the time. Your vehicles will stay with us. They can therefore no longer be used for purposes of public nuisance or entertainment.

Since these vehicles were impounded, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office has not provided any information on when people whose vehicles were impounded could potentially get them back.
