Ncuti Gatwa left his role as a doctor after playing the emblematic character of two series on Doctor Who.
At the end of the final of the series of this evening, Gatwa regenerates in Billie Piper, who previously played the doctor’s companion, Rose Tyler.
In a press release, the BBC refers to the doctor’s regeneration, but says: “How and why she (Billie Piper) is back remains to be seen …”
Gatwa said: “This trip was the one I will never forget and a role that will be part of me forever.”
The credit at the end of the program said: “Ncuti Gatwa as a doctor. Jodie Whittaker as a doctor. And presenting Billie Piper”.
Piper appeared for the first time in the program in 2005 when he returned to television for the first time since the 1990s, appearing alongside Christopher Eccleston then David Tennant.
Billie Piper, a former pop star who turned later to the theater, had a successful career on television and on stage.
After playing Rose Tyler for two complete series in 2005 and 2006, she was acclaimed for roles, including the working -class sex worker in Secret Diary of A Call Girl and the main character of I Hate Suzie by Sky Atlantic.
In 2017, she won a prize for the best actress at the Olivier’s, for her Performance in the room Yerma. And more recently, was nominated for a BAFTA for playing the television producer Sam McALISTER in SCOOP, a drama on the disastrous interview of Prince Andrew on Newsnight in 2019.

Gatwa only played the doctor for 18 months, appearing in two series. It was the shortest moment that an actor has played the character since Christopher Eccleston left the show after a series in 2005.
There is still uncertainty about the moment when the drama will return. The showrunner and editor -in -chief Russell T Davies previously declared that no decision would be made on the commissioning of the next series until this series is broadcast.
The last two series of the show have been co -produced and broadcast internationally by the Disney +streaming service, which gave the time travel drama a larger budget. Discussions on the question of whether the BBC and Disney wish to renew this agreement or if other options should be explored, should take some time.
For a new series to be ready for 2026, production should take place relatively soon. So, for the moment, a new series or a special Billie Piper before 2027 seems unlikely.
