Ajit Pawar of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has been appointed Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly.

Maharashtra Assembly Principal Secretary on Monday informed that NCP Legislative Party Leader Jayant Patil had proposed Pawar’s name for the LoP which was endorsed by the Assembly.

Ajit Pawar succeeds Devendra Fadnavis of the BJP, who was sworn in as deputy chief minister of the Maharashtra government led by Eknath Shinde on June 30.

President Rahul Narvekar has announced that Ajit Pawar will take over as LoP in the Maharashtra Assembly. He added that the NCP led by Sharad Pawar has become the largest opposition party in the House of 288 members.

In his first address to the Maharashtra Assembly as the state’s chief minister, Eknath Shinde described Ajit Pawar as a mature politician and administrator.

Shinde won the ground test today, winning the support of 164 MPs, while 99 voted against.

Addressing the Assembly, Shinde said he had been suppressed for a long time and the rebellion was a consequence of the unfair treatment he had received.

“Today’s events did not happen in a single day,” Shinde said in his victory speech after his led government won the vote of confidence in the Legislative Assembly.

Last month, dissident lawmakers from the Shiv Sena, under Shinde’s leadership, united, leading to the collapse of the MVA government led by two-and-a-half-year-old Uddhav Thackeray in Maharashtra.
