Today, the Phoenix Suns traded an unprotected 2031 first-round pick to the Utah Jazz for three first-rounders, one each in 2025, 2027 and 2029. Utah had additional picks thanks to earlier trades of Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell. All picks entering Phoenix are expected to be the least favorable in each of those years between the Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Jazz, all held by Utah.
Shams Charania announced the news.
The Phoenix Suns are trading their 2031 unprotected opener to the Utah Jazz for three first-round picks, sources tell ESPN. The Suns acquire the least favorable firsts in 2025 from Cleveland/Minnesota, 2027 from Cleveland/Minnesota/Utah and 2029 from Cleveland/Minnesota/Utah.

The Jazz trade three presumably inferior picks to Phoenix for a chance to get one in six years, unprotected. Phoenix, meanwhile, is acquiring a selection of picks that will make short-term trade maneuvering easier, as they have already swapped (odd years) or exchanged (even years) their first rounds between 2025 and 2030 in previous deals.
These picks are expected to somehow facilitate the Suns’ acquisition of Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler. Stay tuned.
