“You also forget to mention that (Trump) also had a long telephone call with President (Ukraine) Zelenskyy,” he said. “There is a clear convergence emerging: we all want peace in Ukraine, sooner that late. We all want Ukraine to be in the best possible position.”
The beginnings of the US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, in Europe, did a lot. During his first trip to Brussels since he was confirmed by the US Senate, HegSeth told his counterparts on Wednesday at the NATO headquarters that Zelenskyy had no chance of bringing Ukraine to his borders before 2014.
He also closed the hope that kyiv would join NATO, to which Zelenskyy replied: “I do not think these doors were really open”, in a pointed comment on past and current American administrations.
Hegseth spurted Trump’s efforts on Thursday to face Putin.
“You saw President Trump yesterday, who is himself the best negotiator on the planet, bringing together two parties to find a negotiated peace, which is ultimately what everyone wants,” Hegseth told journalists.
However, several NATO defense ministers – including Sweden, Estonia and Canada – have also stressed that Ukraine should be involved in peace talks.
