Bologna is almost there. Two wins in their final three matches of the Serie A season would take the Champions League to the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara for the first time since 1965, when they failed to advance beyond the preliminary round.
Six points would guarantee Bologna that all-important top five, but they might not even need it. Atalanta and Roma are both four points behind Thiago Motta’s men and cannot afford any more slip-ups.
It goes without saying that qualifying for the premier European tournament would be an extraordinary feat.
In mid-October last year, a few weeks into Thiago Motta’s tenure in charge of Bologna, they lost 3-2 to Napoli. This result left the Emilia-Romagna club on the verge of entering the relegation zone.
Since then, it’s been quite a journey. Bologna rallied to finish ninth last season and are already guaranteed to improve on that feat this time around.
A simple finish in the first half was the aim at the start of the campaign, but Bologna exceeded all expectations. Only one of their last 15 Serie A games has ended in defeat, leaving Thiago Motta’s side just a few points behind Juventus in third.
Yet this could become the club’s best league finish since their last top-three finish in 1967.
Thanks to his good work this season, Thiago Motta has established himself as one of the most promising young coaches on the continent.
An innovative thinker, his team impressed with its flexibility, intensity and technical quality. Bologna, one of the youngest teams in Serie A on average, are progressive with the ball and aggressive without it.
Napoli will try to stop them this weekend, but it’s not as easy as it seems. Currently, in the only qualifying place for the Europa Conference League, their hopes of reaching the Europa League places are slim.

Many wondered if Bologna’s relative inexperience would end up working against them in the race, but we’ve seen little sign of that yet.
Thiago Motta’s side are proving difficult to beat, with European champions Inter the only side to have triumphed over them since mid-January.
However, Bologna are struggling in one area: they have struggled to turn draws into wins in recent times. Four of their last five meetings ended with level scores, a sequence that saw Atalanta and Roma topple them.

Three of their last five games ended 0-0, while Bologna have only scored eight times in their last eight.

A right-footed wide player who cuts inside from the left, Saelemaekers has found himself in goal-scoring positions with more and more regularity of late.
He has been Bologna’s main scorer in recent weeks and that could be the case again here.
