The myanmar army shot a convoy of the Chinese Red Cross trying to deliver food and drugs to the desperate survivors of the massive earthquake in Myanmar, highlighting the dangers with aid groups are confronted with the country’s civil war.
The army said on Wednesday that its soldiers opened fire on vehicles carrying rescue supplies in the northern state of Shan torn apart by the war after the convoy did not inform its presence in advance. Armed rebel groups also said that the soldiers had launched dozens of air strikes from the TEMBLOR of 2.7 Friday wholesalers, who killed at least 2,700, killing dozens of civilians.
Although the ghost government in exile, known as the national government of unity and an alliance of three rebel groups, announced ceasements to stop in the wake of the earthquake, the army, which seized power in a coup four years ago, said that it would not stop hostilities. The ferocious civil war had already caused generalized suffering before the earthquake, which killed at least 2,700 and left millions of people with little food and water.
The main general Min Aung Hlaing, the head of the Myanmar junta, said on Tuesday evening in a statement that military operations would continue as “necessary protective measures” despite the earthquake.
“There is nothing necessary or protection to attack people who are trying to help people,” Tom Andrews said, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Myanmar. “Continue to launch military offenses is simply scandalous.”
Tuesday around 9:30 p.m., the soldiers shot a Chinese Red Cross convoy near the village of Ummati in the north of the state of Shan, according to General Zaw Min Tun, the spokesperson for the Myanmar army.
