For many students, spring holidays mean raising parties, beach clothes and beer bangs. For my family – including my two university ages – it meant exploring Boston together, dip in history and check a Celtics home game on the list of buckets.
Although we have a fairly limited travel budget due to university expenses, my husband and I have prioritized this trip because our window to travel with the family of four people shrinks. Soon, my sons will most likely travel with friends and will study abroad. In the blink of an eye, they will have a career with work obligations, which makes planning even more difficult.
Traveling with young adults is a treasure. Our wires easily use public transport, cheerfully try new foods and travel miles to do tourism without whining. Even better, traveling together gives us time to connect. During our walks in the streets of Boston, we discussed the ethics of the death penalty, beliefs on the spiritual domain, the foods that we will never eat and prospects for the NBA qualifiers. We have covered everything.
As a family, we darled at every moment of this trip because it could have been our last.
Fortunately, we all like history, so the sites of the Freedom Trail have not disappointed. We stayed in an airbnb in the north, a few steps from the house of Paul Revere and not far from the leaner house in Boston. We also had a good time walking in neighborhoods like Beacon Hill and Back Bay.
A favorite judgment was the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum, the location of the famous unresolved art of 35 years ago.
No family vacation is complete without checking the food scene of our destination. Because we were in the North, it meant a lot of Italian cuisine.
Of course, we could not come to Boston and go without seafood. We dinner on spaghetti with clams, fried shrimp, lobster rolls and the booty boats, ending with a particularly memorable meal at the historic Warren Tavern in Charlestown.
Raised with an older brother obsessed with Larry Bird, I have encouraged the Celtics for as long as I remember. My younger son joined the club during the Kyrie Irving years, and now there are all four faithful fans. For Christmas, we surprised our sons with tickets for a home game, the centerpiece of this trip.
Enter TD Garden before the match, I’m going to cherish forever. As fans of our hometown of Minnesota Timberwolves, we saw several NBA matches, but nothing was better than seeing the Boston prosecution in person.
Although the game did not lead to the victory that we hoped, it was always exciting to lose our voice when we encourage our favorite player, Jaylen Brown, and complained about the referees with the rest of the crowd.
We do not know when our last official family vacation will be, but because we know that they are not unlimited, we are so grateful that we have taken advantage of this time while we could.
This trip was a success because we have intentionally chose a destination that seduced us all, and we have built flexibility to allow a variety of experiences – from street food to historic museums to professional sports.
Above all, however, our trip has succeeded because of the time we spent together – full of intentional conversations, spontaneous laughter and memories that we will have forever.
Next year, maybe our sons will be on the beach with friends, but for this year, I’m so happy that our family is together for the spring holidays.
