Musk slams Biden for pandering to Big Three automakers, says president treats Americans like fools

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has ripped into President Biden, saying he “treats the American public like fools” after the president met with the heads of rivals General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co.

Mr Biden hosted a roundtable this week with GM CEO Mary Barra, Ford CEO Jim Farley and others to drum up support for his $1.75 trillion welfare bill and the climate, which included significant spending on electric vehicles.

The massive spending package would increase the tax credit from $7,500 for electric vehicles to $12,500 if they are made in a union-run factory.

Mr. Musks’ plans are not unionized.

After the meeting, Mr Biden posted a video with Ms Barra saying that “companies like GM and Ford are building more electric vehicles here than ever before”.

Mr Musk slammed the president on Twitter, calling him a “wet (sock) puppet in human form”. He later wrote that “Biden treats the American public like fools.”

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Tesla sells the vast majority of electric vehicles in the United States, although GM and Ford are moving aggressively to ramp up production.

As Mr. Biden proposes policies aimed at increasing sales of electric vehicles, he has often appeared with executives from GM, Ford and Stellantis NV, three automakers whose workers are members of the United Auto Workers Union.

Tesla, meanwhile, has actively fought union organizing efforts at its factories, leaving it on the fringes of Mr. Biden.

Mr. Musk has previously expressed his frustration at being ignored by the administration. It is the only other major automaker headquartered in the United States and is a pioneer in the electric vehicle sector.

He complained that the White House is “union controlled” and “not the friendliest administration.”
