Several people were shot near a highway north of London, Kentucky, and a person of interest remains at large, authorities said Saturday.
London Mayor Randall Weddle said in a video posted on Facebook that seven people had been injured, not all by gunshots but in car crashes. He added that there had been no fatalities so far.
The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook that the shooting happened near I-75, which was closed at Exit 49 “due to an active shooter situation,” without providing further details.
The London Police Department released an image of a person of interest and identified him as Joseph A. Couch, a 32-year-old white male who stands approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. Couch is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached, police said.
Weddle asked the public to avoid the area or choose an alternate route, also advising against using U.S. Route 25 in either direction between London and Livingston.
