Mt Beauty Airport: Two people dead after plane crash at picturesque countryside airport

A plane has crashed at a picturesque airport, killing two people on board.

Ambulances and other emergency services were called to the scene of a light plane crash, northeast of Victoria’s Mount Beauty Airport, around 1:40 p.m. on Saturday.

It is believed the two men were flying over Embankment Drive when the plane crashed.

The pilot and passenger, who have not yet been identified, both died at the scene despite the frantic efforts of CFA volunteers and paramedics who attempted to resuscitate them.

Emergency services can be seen at the site of a fatal plane crash at Victoria’s Mt Beauty Airport.

Two people have died after a plane crashed in the Mt Beauty area of Victoria’s Alpine northeast.

The two men were the only occupants of the plane.

The police will prepare a report for the coroner.

An eyewitness to the crash said it appeared the light plane was trying to land before veering into a paddock just short of the tarmac.

“I was at the end of the runway where the accident happened,” witness Tony told the Herald Sun.

“It looks like a light aircraft has arrived off the runway.

“They were performing CPR on two people.

“It potentially rolled over on landing…the plane is destroyed.”

The CFA said all units would remain on site for a period of time.

“Units from Mount Beauty and Tawonga as well as the designated Mount Beauty rescue team responded,” a CFA statement said.

“Ambulance Victoria, Air Ambulance and Victoria Police are also on scene to assist the occupants.

“Emergency services crews will remain on site for some time.”

The Country Fire Authority said it received several calls about the incident and its crews were able to provide first aid until paramedics arrived at the scene.

Previously, Mount Beauty Airport experienced the tragic death of Matthew Farrell, a pilot who crashed a light plane into dense bush shortly after takeoff in September 2022.

An investigation revealed that other pilots on the ground considered the weather conditions to be poor at the time of the takeoff attempt.

Farrell earned a pilot’s license through an accelerated conversion course obtained through his paragliding accreditation.

During the investigation, concerns were raised about the adequacy of this training.
