MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis police officer is in the hospital after being struck by a car during a traffic stop Tuesday afternoon.
Police say at 1:47 p.m., officers attempted to stop a maroon Corvette traveling east on East Holmes Road. The vehicle had a flat tire and no tags were displayed.
The Corvette stopped when a gray Dodge Challenger pulled up alongside the car.
Police say a man and woman got out of the Corvette and an officer attempted to restrain the man when the Challenger struck the officer and his vehicle.
When the Challenger left the scene, officers pursued the vehicle until they lost sight of it at Getwell Road and Shelby Drive.
The injured officer was transported to Regional One in non-critical condition. No other injuries were reported.
Vincent Lipford is one of many shoppers at the Whitehaven Walmart who drove to the big stage. He said it wasn’t surprising and he was tired of hearing the same old story.
“It’s sad because most people just want to go out, have fun, live their lives and go home. But because someone is not thinking, they interrupt all of this. The whole process,” he said. “When you hurt someone, you don’t just hurt that person. You hurt their family, their friends, everyone close to them. You’re interrupting a whole bunch of lives.
MPD says there were three suspects inside the Challenger and the front of the vehicle was damaged. If you have any information that could help police, call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
