The Dan Norris deputy was arrested for suspicion of rape, sexual infractions for children, kidnapping children and misconduct in a public service.
The Labor Party says that he “immediately suspended” the deputy for North East Somerset and Hanham after being informed of his arrest.
The police of Avon and Somerset confirmed that a man in sixties had been arrested on Friday and released under conditional deposit.
BBC News contacted Norris to comment.
Norris, 65, was elected deputy for North East Somerset and Hanham in 2024, beating the conservative deputy Jacob Rees-Mogg.
He was previously in Parliament from 1997 to 2010 representing the headquarters of Wansdyke.
The deputy was a junior minister under Gordon Brown and was an assistant whip under Tony Blair.
Norris has also been the mayor of western England since 2021, but should withdraw before the local elections in May.
According to the website of the combined authority of the west of England, Norris previously worked as a child protection agent formed by the NSPCC.
In a statement, Avon and Somerset police said: “In December 2024, we received a benchmark from another police force relating to the alleged non -recent sexual offenses to children who have been committed against a girl.
“Most of the offenses would have taken place in the 2000s, but we are also investigating an alleged rape offense from the 2020s.
“An investigation, led by Operation Bluestone officers, our dedicated rape team and series of serious sexual assaults, remains in progress and at an early stage.
“The victim is supported and has access to any specialized assistance or support he needs.
“A man, aged sixties, was arrested on Friday April 4, suspected of sexual offenses against a girl (under the 1956 law on sexual offenses), rape (under the 2003 law on sexual offenses), kidnapping children and misconduct in a public service.
“He was released under conditional surety for requests for information.”
A spokesperson for the Labor Party said on Saturday: “Dan Norris MP was immediately suspended by the Labor Party after being informed of his arrest.
“We cannot comment more while the police investigation is underway.”
The suspension means that Mr. Norris, the deputy of North East Somerset and Hanham, would also have suspended the party whip, which means that he is unable to sit as a Labor MP in the communes.
