Mp creates history with Maiden Ranji Triumph and beats Mumbai by six wickets

Madhya Pradesh, who have not been considered among cricket’s elite for the past decade, humiliated national powerhouse Mumbai by six wickets in a one-sided Ranji Trophy final under manager Chandrakant Pandit on Sunday, who exorcised the ghosts of losing one on this land 23 summers ago.

On the final day, Mumbai could only manage 269 in their second run, leaving MP with a paltry target of 108, and they did it in style as Pandit claimed a record sixth national title as coach.

Sarfaraz Khan (45), who finished the season with 18 points out of 1000 points, and the young Suved Parkar (51) tried their luck, but with the need to attack at every opportunity, MP Kumar Kartikeya (4 /98) and the other bowlers knew the wickets would come their way. During the chase there were a few misfires, but with just over 100 to get, it was a walk in the park for the MP team.

As they clinched victory, Pandit was flooded with (not happy) memories, which he hasn’t been able to erase for over two decades and despite winning five trophies as a coach. It was here at Chinnaswamy Stadium in the summer of 1999 when MP, despite leading 75 in the first set, failed to win the match as Pandit, a proud captain, ended his playing career in tears.

MP cricket team will be well received by public for Ranji win, says CM

The Madhya Pradesh cricket team will be publicly greeted for winning the prestigious Ranji Trophy for the first time, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said. Madhya Pradesh humiliated national powerhouse Mumbai by six wickets in a one-sided Ranji Trophy final on Sunday.

“For the first time, Madhya Pradesh won the Ranji Trophy title by defeating Mumbai, which has won this title several times, and created history. We are very happy and this is an emotional moment for us. The winning team will be given a big welcome from the public in Bhopal,” Chouhan said, congratulating coach Chandrakant Pandit, captain Aditya Shrivastava and the whole team for the victory.

Congress leader MP Kamal Nath and BJP chairman VD Sharma were among those who hailed the achievement. Thanks to efforts under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, people’s awareness of sports has increased, Sharma said.
