Motherwell’s ‘Canadian Lionel Messi’ Theo Bair dreaming of facing Inter Miami star at Copa America

Amid dreams of Copa America glory, Theo Bair, Motherwell’s ‘Canadian Lionel Messi’, fantasizes about a showdown with the Argentine legend.

The 24-year-old remains hopeful of being part of his national team for the next tournament in America this summer.

Canada opens its tournament against reigning World Cup and Copa America champions Argentina on June 20.

Bair received his first call-up in four years for last month’s international break but was only an unused substitute.

When asked if the opportunity to face Messi and Argentina would provide him with extra motivation until the end of the season, Bair responded in the affirmative, saying: “One hundred percent.

“I would love to play in that game, or at least be involved in it, but I’m very focused on Motherwell at the moment,” he told the Daily Record.

“I’m back here now and we have a lot to play for. My summons was a reward for this season.

“I think the coach there told me I did really well and got exactly what I deserved, and I didn’t get to play, but that’s a first step , and you have to start somewhere.”

And the striker has a strong chance of making the team, having registered 12 goals and four assists in 31 Scottish Premiership appearances this season.

His performances this campaign have seen him compared to Messi by Motherwell fans, with his chip against Livingston reminiscent of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Commenting on the huge praise from the Motherwell faithful, Bair said: “I’ve seen a few of those comments. I found it funny.

“There’s good and bad, but I’m glad the fans showed some faith in me. I want to work hard for the club, but it’s nice to be appreciated.

“I know I got a lot of stick in the previous games, because of the lack of goals. I don’t deny it, but I always felt like I had it in me.

“I wouldn’t call it a purple patch, I would say I’m playing at the level I hope to play at.

“I just hope to continue like this. I wasn’t paying attention, but every striker knows that if he doesn’t score, he will get stuck.

“The criticism is also there because people know we can do better.”
