Mother and girlfriend charged in death of 8-year-old

Both women left during the ongoing investigation and did not call detectives to explain their disappearance or ask questions about the investigation, court documents say.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus police have issued an arrest warrant for the mother of an 8-year-old boy whose body was allegedly found in the attic of a home Friday evening.

Arrest warrants have been issued for LaShanda Wilder, 32, and her girlfriend, Johnna Lowe, 33, who are both charged with obstruction of justice. The charges came after officers discovered what appears to be the body of LaShanda’s 8-year-old son Martonio Wilder, who was reported missing Friday.

Police were called to a home in the 1000 block of Olmstead Avenue for reports of a missing child. When officers arrived, they spoke to LaShanda, who said Martonio was last seen between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Thursday, when he was put to bed.

Franklin County Municipal Court documents show officers searched the home without success and the missing persons unit responded.

Detectives called in a K-9 dog to search the home. Court documents state that at that point, LaShanda became “uncooperative” and did not want the dog inside her home. She left the scene with Lowe and two other children.

Around 6:20 p.m., a body matching Martonio’s description was found hiding in the home’s attic, in a trash bag and a sleeping bag cover, records show. Firefighters pronounced him dead at 6:33 p.m. Foul play is suspected. Police are treating the case as a suspicious death, but could not say how the boy died.

On Friday around 9 p.m., an AMBER Alert was issued for Martonio and LaShanda’s two younger siblings. The two siblings were found safe at Lowe’s home with his mother on East 18th Avenue a short time later. LaShanda and Lowe were not there.

Detectives and family members attempted to contact both women, without success.

LaShanda and Lowe left during the active investigation and did not call detectives to explain their disappearance or ask questions about the investigation, court records show.

Anyone with information regarding this incident or the whereabouts of the two women is asked to call the Columbus Police Department’s Homicide Unit at (614) 645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at (614) 461-8477 (TIPS).
