Mostly sunny skies, cooler conditions with light winds – NBC Chicago

As Chicago-area residents prepare for the new year after an unseasonably warm Christmas Eve and Christmas, it appears at least a little bit of winter is returning.

Saturday morning begins with temperatures near freezing or slightly below freezing under cloud cover that is expected to clear further by late morning.

Some of the fog that formed overnight may still cause problems on the roads, particularly in areas where temperatures are below freezing, allowing the fog to freeze.

Temperatures will climb into the upper 30s to low 40s by mid-afternoon, with mostly sunny skies helping a chilly day feel a little livelier.

Although cloud cover will dissipate to likely create a mostly sunny afternoon in the Chicago area, clouds will begin to return in the early evening and overnight, bringing with them a chance of snow on New Year’s Eve .

Light snowfall is expected to affect parts of the region overnight into Sunday, with periods of light accumulation expected in parts of the region throughout the day.

Residents of northwest Indiana along the lakefront will likely see lingering lake-effect snow Sunday evening, with potentially heavier accumulations there. Wind chill values in the area Sunday evening are expected to fall to between 15 and 20 degrees.

Intermittent snowfall will make for a cool Monday, with high temperatures in the mid-30s and partly cloudy skies.

Similar temperatures are forecast for much of the week, with highs likely in the mid-30s, accompanied by dry conditions and partly sunny skies.
