More than half of registered voters have linked their voter list to their Aadhaar

The Representation of the People Act was amended in December last year to pave the way for a voluntary link between Aadhaar and voter list details.

Nearly 56 crore out of the roughly 95 crore registered voters have linked their Aadhaar details to voter rolls, an exercise that the government and the electoral commission said would eliminate duplicate voter roll entries.

EC officials said between 55 and 56 million voters had shared their Aadhaar details with electoral authorities for a link to the voters list.

The Representation of the People Act was amended in December last year to pave the way for a voluntary link between Aadhaar and voter list details.

Subsequently, later that year, the Union Law Department issued rules to implement changes to the Election Law. According to a Ministry of Justice notification, using the newly introduced Form 6B, existing voters can share their Aadhaar number with polling authorities.

“In exercising the powers conferred by subsection (5) of section 23 of the Representation of the People Act 1950 (43 of 1950), the Central Government hereby gives notice of 1st April 2023 as the date to which or before which every person whose name is entered on the voters list may state his Aadhaar number in accordance with the said article,” the notification read.

The new form was introduced with effect from August 1 “for the collection of Aadhaar numbers”.

In July, the Elections Commission warned of “tough” disciplinary action against voter registration officers for leaking physical forms filled out by voters to share their Aadhaar details.
