Montenegro considers ‘total’ gun ban after 12 shooting deaths

Montenegro’s National Security Council on Friday considered new gun controls, including a “total” ban on firearms, in response to the New Year’s Eve attack that killed 12 people.

THE Washington Post noted that the shooter, Aleksandar Martinovic, 45, committed suicide after police cornered him. The Associated Press pointed out that Martinovic apparently began his rampage after a “bar fight,” after which he retrieved his gun and killed 12 innocent people.

Martinovic used a 9mm firearm and police estimate he fired a total of 37 rounds, based on the shell casings found at the various locations where he fired.

Montenegro, a Balkan country of around 620,000 inhabitants, “is sixth in the world in terms of the number of illegal weapons per capita.” Despite this, the Job observed that Montenegro “experiences relatively few mass shootings.”

In a message to council instead opted for “draconian” sanctions for people in possession of illegal weapons. .

Regarding illegal gun owners, Spajic said: “There will be no mercy for these people. They will end up in prison.

Montenegro witnessed another mass shooting in August 2022, an incident in which ten innocent people were killed.
