Moana Is Close To $1Billion Worldwide Box Office

Refresh for latest…: This has been a solid holdover weekend with milestones crossed and neared for the major titles in release as we come off a really strong end to 2024. But it’s bittersweet as we cannot ignore the fire devastation in the home of Hollywood. My thoughts go out to you all who have been affected, especially my international box office family.

Here’s how the weekend went globally and overseas. Lots to celebrate:

Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King is now the No. 9 global release of 2024 with $539.7M, including $350.9M from the international box office (making it No. 8 on the offshore chart). The overseas drop was 48% for a $27.9M weekend.

Here are the Top 5 markets to date: France ($33.7M), UK ($29.9M), Mexico ($24.6M), Germany ($24M) and Italy ($21.8M).

Universal/Focus’ Nosferatu continues to scare up crazy good numbers, opening in India and Lebanon this weekend to reach a total of 63 in-release territories. The Robert Eggers’ movie surpassed $50M internationally this weekend, adding $13.7M to reach an offshore cume of $54M and a global total of $135.8M. Overseas, this is Eggers’ biggest movie ever; as well as his top in 49 markets, including UK & Ireland, Mexico, Italy, Germany, and Australia.

The Top 5 for Nosferatu are as follows: UK ($11.1M), Mexico ($6.03M), Italy ($4.3M), Germany ($3.5M) and Australia ($3.4M).

Disney’s Moana 2, meanwhile, is surfing closer to the $1B mark with an $11.1M international weekend. That brings the overseas total to $554.9M and global to $989.8M. When Moana 2 crosses $1B in the coming days, it will be Dis’ third 2024 release to the milestone – Dis is the only studio in 2024 to have any $1B movies.

The current weekend on Moana 2 was a 58% drop overall, with strong holds in China (+16%), Argentina (-24%), Spain (-30%) and Australia (-31%).

Here’s some fun stats: Moana 2 is the 2nd highest grossing animated release of all time in Brazil and France, and the highest grossing Walt Disney Animated Studios release ever in France, Australia, Brazil and Mexico as well as across the Latin American region, Greece, Slovakia, South Africa, Turkey, UAE, New Zealand, Peru, Chile, Central America, Ecuador, Bolivia and Uruguay.

The Top 5 to date are: France ($60.6M), UK ($49.7M), Germany ($41.7M), Mexico ($30.2M) and Australia ($29.5M).

Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 shows no signs of slowing, adding $20.3M from 62 markets this session. A 55% drop lifts the total to $180.3M overseas and $384.8M global.

Top 5 to date are: UK ($25.9M), Mexico ($18.8M), France ($15.8M), Australia ($13.2M) and Brazil ($9.2M).

Though it’s available on PVOD, Universal’s Wicked is still casting a spell overseas as it is about to cross $700M worldwide. With $5.6M from 81 offshore markets this frame, it now counts $238.7M from the international box office and $697.6M global.

Japan is still to release.
