MLS Power Rankings – Wayne Rooney’s DC debut lifts bottom of league off table foot

Two games at 4-4? Major League Soccer was one this weekend.

Behind those eight-goal deals were a two-goal comeback in stoppage time, an MVP candidate claiming his position, the league leaders staging an impressive victory from behind and the fury of Mother Nature. Oh, and there are three days left until the transfer window closes.

You’ve got goals, you’ve got comebacks, you’ve got stars and you’ve got a league that can still be turned upside down by a new signing. You have everything but the ability to take deep breaths, so buckle up because you have power ratings too.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about LAFC — and there are a lot of awesome things about the league’s best team, shockingly — is how they absolutely wipe out opponents’ lives. Even after conceding an own goal to start the game against Seattle, they took the lead before halftime and then absolutely killed the Sounders for the entire second half. Score first, concede first, whatever form the match takes, the Black and Gold eventually take control and leave you for dead.

Not that the Union needs more help or brighter young talent, but here comes Jack McGlynn. A goal and an assist in Philly’s 6-0 loss to Houston was the final step for the 19-year-old, who has started three games in a row now, all Union wins. The rich get (or, more accurately, grow) richer.

What did NYCFC look like in their first game without Valentin Castellanos? Like a team missing the reigning MVP. The fact that they played in Montreal even to a 0-0 draw north of the border showed just how much quality they have, but it’s impossible not to notice the quality that left Spain too .

Sebastian Druissi is five goals and three assists in Austin’s last six games, so you can’t say he’s feasting on weak competition like he did in a 2-0 win against SKC this weekend. You’d understand if the Argentine started thinking about where the MVP trophy might be best in his house.

Dallas has had plenty of matches this season where the scoreline didn’t reflect their good play, so you won’t see FCD apologizing for the flattering scoreline in a 1-0 win over the Galaxy. The football gods are fair, after all.

Two shots. That’s all Montreal conceded to NYCFC. It is easy to say that the Quebecers deserved to win for their defensive excellence, but they just didn’t create enough and had to settle for a draw. As the clock ticks on the transfer window, it’s possible that Montreal’s MLS Cup chances will as well, as it would be a real problem if he added a striker to this squad.

RSL have played a lot of games this season where they have been good forwards away from a win. Since signing Jefferson Savarino, they’ve mostly gotten that good forward game, but the fact that he’s scoring goals hasn’t resulted in a lot of wins. He scored again on Saturday, but Salt Lake could only tie at San Jose. Riddle, mystery, riddle, RSL.

Was it one point won or two points lost in Minnesota’s 4-4 draw? The close playoff race indicates points have dropped, but the challenge of a scorching opponent on the road indicates a point has been won. More importantly, the Fun Soccer judges say it doesn’t matter because this game reigned supreme.

Brandon Vazquez is doing his best to make Gregg Berhalter think long and hard before giving him a look ahead of the World Cup. After two more goals in a 4-4 draw with Miami, it may be less about whether he gets the chance to play for the national team in September than whether Berhalter regrets not having him come earlier.
