The Council of Governors of Major League Soccer has today authorized a second phase of exploration in a potential passage to the international football calendar, as well as a continuous evaluation of regular season formats and the league qualifying series.
Any potential change would not take effect until the 2027 season at the earliest.
This next phase will include additional consultation with the main stakeholders and the development of a complete transition plan.
Historically, the MLS season begins in February and ends with the MLS Cup in December. The international football calendar generally takes place from July / August to May / June.
MLS has 30 clubs covering the United States and Canada, taking into account many time zones and climates.
