MLB Home Run Derby national anthem singer’s performance draws criticism on social media

The MLB home run derby didn’t go as planned Monday night, as singer Ingrid Andress was heavily criticized for her rendition of the national anthem at Globe Life Field Monday night.

Andress, a 32-year-old singer-songwriter who has charted on the Billboard Hot 100, stood between the pitcher’s mound and home plate and began singing.

Andress seems to have trouble controlling his voice early on, especially on the higher notes of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Alec Bohm of the Philadelphia Phillies, participating in the Home Run Derby, was even seen smiling when the broadcast showed him during the anthem.

Bohm’s moment was reminiscent of a poor performance by pop star Fergie before the 2018 NBA All-Star Game, which showed several NBA stars trying not to react to her singing.

Social media was quick to respond to Andress, and they were pretty harsh with their criticism.

“My ears are bleeding. One of the worst renditions of the national anthem ever,” posted one X user.

Another said: “Ingrid Andress gives Fergie a hard time for the worst national anthem ever.”

“Uh… that anthem was interesting,” posted another X user.

Sports Illustrated reporter Alex Carr commented: “I’m really sorry, I’m sure Ingrid Andress is a wonderful person, but that was one of the worst national anthems I’ve ever heard in my entire life.”
