MLB Home Run Derby: Ingrid Andress’ national anthem draws attention as Alec Bohm struggles to keep a straight face

Ingrid Andress attracted a lot of attention Monday at Globe Life Field.

Probably not in the way she hoped.

Andress sang the national anthem to kick off the MLB home run derby in Arlington, Texas, and, well, it wasn’t great. Listen to him:

In his defense, singing in front of 40,000 fans is no easy feat. And Andress remembered all the lyrics, something Black Pumas singer Eric Burton failed to do when he sang the song before the 2022 World Series.

However, Andress’ rendition of the national anthem left Philadelphia Phillies star Alec Bohm struggling to keep a straight face on the field.

This naturally brought to mind Fergie’s national anthem performance at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game, where many players and celebrities in attendance at the Staples Center in Los Angeles couldn’t hold back before she belted out her iconic rallying cry, “Let’s play basketball!”

Andress has released two albums in her career, most recently 2022’s “Good Person.” The 32-year-old singer has been nominated for four Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and Best Country Song in 2021. She has toured on her own, with Stevie Nicks, and alongside fellow country stars like Keith Urban, Dan + Shay and Tim McGraw. Her father, Brad Andress, was a major league strength and conditioning coach for nearly two decades, including stints with the Detroit Tigers and Colorado Rockies.

Texas-born country singer Cody Johnson will perform the national anthem before the All-Star Game on Tuesday. While Andress has the credentials to sustain her singing career, Johnson has a low bar to clear.
