MJF is back in AEW with a new look, an old attitude and a big promise

Rumors were circulating all day about possible surprise returns or debuts during AEW. Double or nothing tonight (May 26) in Las Vegas. One, from X/Twitter scooper WrestleVotes, said we wouldn’t want to miss the start of the show because “big events” were expected early.

The opening PPV contest between Will Ospreay and Roderick Strong didn’t go without incident (read what happened here), but that wasn’t what Votes was making us smart about. This happened immediately after, when Adam Cole made his way to the ring. Cole’s return is supposedly still a ways off, but he headed to the ring to talk about Sin City fans.

Cole’s promo was designed to talk about “The Devil,” the angle that saw him turn on his best brochacho Maxwell Jacob Friedman and cost MJF his AEW World Championship. We haven’t seen Friedman since, as he recovered from the litany of injuries he suffered late in his title run. But another rumor circulating this afternoon was that MJF was spotted flying to Phoenix, a relatively short distance from Las Vegas… so the crowd was ready when Max’s music hit.

First we got a video of MJF’s usual wardrobe adorned with a Burberry scarf on a mannequin. A character pulled out a torn photo of MJF and Cole from their time as friends and partners last year. The Salt of the Earth took the stage a second later, but he was not wearing his usual outfit. Instead, he wore a denim vest over a leather jacket.

MJF accepted a hug from Cole, but quickly blew it and called security to remove the “noodle-armed, bobble-headed son of a bitch” from his ring. Friedman said he would never trust again after being betrayed by Cole and would now only be fueled by “hate, hate, hate.”

He also discussed his contractual situation. MJF had been teasing “the 2024 bidding war” for years before leaving, but said tonight that unlike so many in the AEW locker room, he doesn’t need “a New Japan or a Vince McMahon” to make him a star. . “MJF created MJF” and he’s also betting on himself. Max has not confirmed that he has signed a new deal with Tony Khan. Instead, he asked a cameraman to zoom in on his new calf tattoo, which says “Bet on yourself” around a poke chip with the AEW logo on it.

The 28-year-old then played Leonardo DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort, calling himself “the wolf of wrestling” and declaring he wasn’t going anywhere.

A lot has happened since we last saw MJF in The end of the world last December. What place does it occupy in the current landscape?

We’re about to find out. Let us know what you think and be thorough Double or nothing results and coverage of the entire show here.
