A California hiker was rescued after being stranded in the mountains for 10 days, surviving on few wild berries and a gallon (3.8 liters) of water a day.

Lukas McClish, 34, left June 11 for what was supposed to be a three-hour hike in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

But it quickly became lost, in part due to the destruction of monuments by recent forest fires in the area.

His family reported him missing on June 16 after he failed to show up for Father’s Day, sparking a multi-day search and rescue operation.

Mr. McClish was found Thursday after a Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office drone spotted him.

They said Mr. McClish was found in the forest between Empire Grade Road and Big Basin Highway in Santa Cruz County.

He was found without major injuries and reunited with his family, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said.

“This was truly a team effort with the best outcome we could have hoped for,” the sheriff’s office said.

In an interview with local outlet ABC News, Mr. McClish said he went hiking that day with “just pants, my pair of hiking shoes and a hat.”

“I had a flashlight and a pair of folding scissors, like a Leatherman tool. And that’s it,” he added.

He said he survived by drinking large quantities of water, which he scooped up with his boot.

“I just made sure to drink a gallon of water every day, but then towards the end my body needed food and some sort of sustenance,” he said.

Mr McClish said the ordeal had left him “tired and a little sore”, and he was moved to see all the rescue teams who had searched for him.

“It was definitely humbling and, I don’t know, it was a great experience,” Mr. McClish said, although he added that he probably won’t get out into the wild for a while.

“I’ve done enough hiking probably for the rest of the year,” he said.
