A 3-year-old girl who went missing in a northwest Indiana community has died after being found hours later along the shore of a small lake, police said.
The girl, who had autism and was non-verbal, died Thursday despite an hour-long effort to resuscitate her, Michigan City Police Department Sgt. Steve Fourker.
She had been reported missing at 11:30 a.m. Thursday and was last seen wearing a t-shirt and diaper, the (Northwest Indiana) Times reported.
Officers from multiple police departments who conducted a search found her two hours later in the water along the north shore of Lake Clare in Long Beach, a community in LaPorte County that overlooks Lake Michigan about 64.4 kilometers east of Chicago.
Authorities have not released the name of the girl, who was pronounced dead at a Michigan City hospital.
Police continued to investigate the incident and interview witnesses. They were also looking for video surveillance of the area.
