20. The classic “Perfect Date” line has a special meaning
Every year on April 25, memes appear to celebrate Miss Rhode Island’s beloved quote about the “perfect date,” which she misinterprets as her favorite day on the calendar rather than her ideal romantic outing . It turns out screenwriter Marc Lawrence wrote the phrase, but Donald changed it by changing the date of his own wife’s birthday.
“I just said, ‘Could it be April 25? It’s my wife’s birthday,'” the director revealed. “So I’m very happy that every year on his birthday there are all these memes going around.”
21. Have the last word
Donald has said that he intentionally includes extra scenes in the rough cuts of his films, just in case something pops up to audiences that he wasn’t expecting, so critics are never invited to these screenings. But, remembers the director, film blogger Harry Knowles snuck into a test screening and “gave it the most scathing and worst review of any film, including blaming me for personally ruining Sandy Bullock’s career.”
Fortunately, the studio didn’t seem perturbed by the initial negative buzz, and ultimately the film was still a success, grossing $212 million worldwide on a budget of $45 million. “The only thing I can say,” Donald said, “is that I’m really happy that the movie became a huge success and a sort of classic comedy, making a lot of money, so that I could somehow turn your finger gently at this review and say: “Hey, hey!”
