Minnie Driver criticizes Donald Trump and refuses to live in a Republican state

After 27 years living in Los Angeles, Minnie Driver is back in London. But when asked if she would ever live in the US again if Donald Trump is re-elected president, the “Good Will Hunting” star replied: “If I lived in a Republican state, no, I couldn’t.”

“But living in California, you’re a little isolated,” the actor continued in an interview with British newspaper The Times. “But do you want to go live in a bubble? Do you run away from the fire or do you go back and help?”

Driver, speaking days after Trump was convicted of 34 counts at his New York trial for taking bribes, said: “Of course he deserves to be in prison — of course he deserves it. But just looking at the amount of money he raised in two days, $53 million in 48 hours, and considering that the Founding Fathers — if there had been mothers involved, maybe it would be different — left no room in the Constitution for the idea that the American people would be stupid enough to vote for a felon, there’s no reflection in the justice system of what would happen if he won. It’s a real headache when the Secret Service is already going around the prisons and saying, ‘What would that look like?’”

The “Beekeeper” and “Hard Rain” actor added that the problem isn’t just Trump, but also “the 70 million people who really appreciate a little bit of racist behavior, nonexistent immigration policies and the dismantling of environmental agencies.”

“They’ve always been there,” she said of Trump’s supporters. “They weren’t created by him. He’s just a symptom, and now they have a mascot.”

Asked whether she thought the political climate in the UK was in a better place, Driver said: “At least the memes are funnier. And I’m more hopeful. For all the divisions in the UK, there seems to be a stronger connection between us. We have this discourse. We talk about it and we laugh about it. We don’t pull out guns and shoot each other about it.”
