Miner shot in Longmont crashes into vehicle, dies in hospital

A miner hit a sign post in Longmont and died after being shot while driving, police said.

The incident unfolded around 9 p.m. Friday when an officer responded to the Twin Peaks Square shopping center to a report of gunshots, the Longmont Police Department said in a news release.

When the officer arrived, a crowd had gathered in a “meeting of cars”, according to the statement.

A suspect has been identified, with minors running towards a car. The officer stopped the vehicle and a passenger in the back got out and fled, police said. Additional officers arrived and arrested the minors who were still in the vehicle.

Police then received a report of a vehicle hitting a pole at Nelson Road and Hover Street, the statement said. Officers arrived and found “a young driver of a vehicle that had been shot down”.

The minor, who was not identified, was taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries, police said. The minors in the stopped vehicle were questioned and released. Investigators have identified a suspect in the case. As of Saturday morning, no charges had been filed.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Daniel Kilian at 303-774-3693 or email daniel.kilian@longmontcolorado.gov.
