Minecraft Creator Notch announces “Minecraft 2”

Minecraft Creator Markus “Notch” Persson recently announced a spiritual successor to his classic survival game, colloquially known as Minecraft 2.

Becoming a major film in 2025 (behind star Jason Momoa), Minecraft is one of the best-selling games of all time, with over 300 million copies sold to date.

However, Notch himself has not been involved with the franchise since 2014, following the sale of his studio Mojang to Microsoft for $2.5 billion.

Notch casually announced its successor to Minecraft

Minecraft

In a social media thread, Markus “Notch” Persson teased fans with a potential Minecraft spiritual successor, he dubbed Minecraft 2.

By asking fans on his personal account X (formerly Twitter), the Minecraft The creator asked what he would prefer to see the developer pursue with his next project, “Do Minecraft 2or continue his work on what he described as “a traditional roguelike… mixed with a tile-based first-person dungeon crawler:”

“The new game I’m passionately working on is currently set up to be a traditional roguelike (i.e. ‘ADOM’, ‘nethack’, etc.) mixed with a first-person dungeon crawler tile-based (i.e. ‘Legend of Grimrock’ (especially 2), ‘Eye of the Beholder’)

But then I figure, maybe there are people who like my work but maybe don’t share my taste for retro nostalgia and would rather I make a spiritual successor to Minecraft, and I mean, of course I would take that money. “

When asked if he could even make a Minecraft sequel without Microsoft or Mojang, Notch admitted, “No, that would be super illegal.” However, he teased “(I could) create a new original game of the same type as Minecraft and call it something else: “

“No, that would be super illegal. Instead, I would create a new original game along the same lines as “Minecraft” and call it something else. These are traditionally sometimes called “spiritual successors”, but they generally feel a a bit flat but, if that’s really what people want, I would love to make this game, it would be my “Gremlins 2”.

“If Microsoft, for whatever reason, wanted me to do it and we could somehow agree on the terms, I would be more than willing to do that,” he said. added. THE Minecraft The creator applied, saying that if the company he sold his game to was interested in his return to the franchise, he would be willing:

“If Microsoft, for some reason, wanted me to do it, and we somehow agreed on the terms, I would be more than willing to do it. I would even give them a much bigger part than I would feel. I have to make it clear that I’m not doing this with bad intentions, but I’ll be a bitch to work with.

Of course, this caused a flurry of speculation about the potential sequel online. Since its original release in 2011, there has been talk of a Minecraft 2 has been a somewhat moot point as the original game has continued to sell.

Although some wonder how serious Notch is about this announcement, he remains adamant that it was real. In a separate thread, Persson told his followers: “I really appreciate being a man of my word:”

“Basically, I announced ‘Minecraft 2’… Oh and I also really enjoy being a man of my word, so I also intend to do it in a way that doesn’t try to no case of sneakily encroaching on the incredible work of the Mojang team.”

Will Minecraft 2 actually ever happen?

Let Notch really do his Minecraft 2-esque spiritual successor remains to be seen, but it seems clear that it will succeed if that’s what the public wants.

Over the years, Microsoft and Mojang have remained relatively silent in the face of a Minecraft following.

Instead, the two tech giants chose to simply continually update the base. Minecraft game and bring it to new platforms as they become available – presumably it will come to Nintendo Switch 2 when it releases (learn more about the Nintendo Switch 2 here).

So this potential new Notch game is perhaps the closest thing to a Minecraft 2 fans never get. Since I left development Minecraft After selling the mega-successful game to Microsoft in 2014, Notch has remained relatively quiet on the development front.

Aside from a few small projects, including a free two-hour Unity demo and several small game-jam projects, the famous developer has yet to release a project on a scale of Minecraft since the release of this game.

This could be a unique testing ground for the developer, seeing if it can strike lightning twice by dipping its toe back into a formula it helped create back in 2011.

Minecraft is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PC, Apple Android and Mac.
