Minecraft animated TV series in preparation at Netflix

Minecraft is coming to Netflix.

Netflix and Mojang Studios are teaming up to develop a CG animated TV series based on the Minecraft franchise. Details on the potential series, which was announced Thursday as part of the game’s 15th anniversary, are slim, other than that it will feature an original story with new characters that shows the world of Minecraft in a new light.

WildBrain, the studio behind Netflix Sonic Prime, Ninjago: Dragons Rising And Carmen Sandiego, will take care of the animation for Minecraft.

Details on the project’s creative team, including a showrunner, have not yet been determined.

Markus Persson created the Minecraft game originally released in 2009, which Jens Bergenstein took over development after the title was made more widely available in 2011. It is the best-selling video game in history, with over 300 million copies sold , with an estimated 140 million monthly active players last year.

Minecraft is considered a “sandbox game,” meaning players can unleash their creativity, build cities, and interact with each other. The Netflix animated series marks the franchise’s latest expansion and joins live events, consumer products and more.

A Minecraft The feature film from Warners and Legendary is set to debut in April 2025 with Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Danielle Brooks among the cast. Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer wrote the screenplay, directed by Jared Hess. It is unclear if any member of the film’s creative team will be involved in the Netflix animated series.

Minecraft becomes the latest popular video game adapted for television and joins a list that includes To fall And tomb Raider (Amazon), Halo (Paramount+), The last of us (HBO), resident Evil And The Witcher (Netflix), among others.

In today’s era of shrinking television landscape, networks and streamers have focused on well-known intellectual property to cut through the clutter and attract viewers.
