Miles Yu, Recognized China Expert, Joins The Washington Times as Columnist

The Washington Times is pleased to announce that Miles Yu has joined the paper as a regular Commentary columnist and contributor to the Times’ national security newsletter, Threat Status.

An internationally recognized expert on Chinese affairs, Mr. Yu will provide important insights to our readers every two weeks in his Red Horizon column. The column will explore the most important challenge facing the United States today: the People’s Republic of China.

Mr. Yu is currently Professor of East Asia and Military and Naval History at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. He is also director of the China Center at the Hudson Institute and a visiting scholar at the Hoover Institution.

Born Yu Maochun, Mr. Yu began his life in China’s Anhui province, amid the turmoil of Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution, when Red Guard fanatics roamed the country, ransacking and killing every remnant of the tradition and capitalism of the country.

Mr. Yu most recently served as senior advisor on China policy and planning to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during the first Trump administration. This position was a key part of the State Department’s policy planning staff.

During this period, Mr. Yu was instrumental in bringing about a major shift in U.S. policy toward China that, for the first time in approximately 40 years, recognized Beijing as a major strategic competitor to the United States. -United. This policy shift has continued in Washington under the Biden administration and has become widely recognized among America’s many allies and partners.

“I’m really looking forward to writing articles about China’s strategic challenges,” Yu said.

“Miles is a wonderful addition to our team of national security and foreign affairs columnists,” said Chris Dolan, executive editor of The Washington Times.
